Safety Rules

ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES – All accidents and injuries, regardless of their nature or severity, must be reported to a supervisor immediately.

ALCOHOL AND DRUGS – Alcohol and illegal drug use are strictly forbidden during working hours. Alcohol and drug use puts you and everyone on the job in danger.

BEHAVIOR – You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional and workmanlike manner at all times. Horseplay, threatening behavior and fighting cannot be tolerated and puts everyone on the job in danger.

CLEAT BOARDS – Cleat boards must be inspected before use to assure that they are in good condition and that no cleats are split or loose.

DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT – Defective equipment must not be used for any reason. Defective equipment should be marked or tagged to prevent usage and reported immediately.

DERRICKS – All derricks must have adequate counterweights (not construction material). Rope must be inspected before each use to assure that it is free from defects. Rope must not be left hanging from wheel when derrick is not in use.

EXTENSION CORDS – All extension cords should be checked daily to assure that there are no defects. All extension cords must be properly grounded. Worn or damaged cords must be cut in half and disposed of.

FALL PROTECTION – Any roof or opening with a change in elevation of more than 6 feet must have all edges properly guarded to prevent falls. Acceptable means of fall protection include a motion stopping safety system, warning lines or the use of a safety monitor.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS – Fire extinguishers are on all job sites. All employees should know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher and be familiar with its operation.

FIRST-AID KITS – First-aid kits are available on all job sites and contain supplies necessary to treat minor injuries. All employees should familiarize themselves with the location of first-aid kits.

GAS CYLINDERS – Gas cylinders must be secured in an upright position. Valves and fittings should be checked regularly. Only enough gas cylinders for that days work may be stored on the roof or work area.

HAND TOOLS – Hand tools will not be used for any other purpose than what they are intended for. All damaged or worn parts should be repaired or replaced immediately.

HOSPITALS/MEDICAL CENTERS – It is important that you make yourself aware of the nearest hospital or medical center in case you are faced with a medical emergency.

HOUSEKEEPING – All work areas must be kept neat and clean at all times.

KETTLES – Kettles must be roped off. Fire extinguisher and water must be kept near the kettle at all times. Kettleman to check all hoses, fittings, motors and propane tanks daily.

LADDERS – All ladders must be placed on level ground, extend three feet above roof edges and be securely tied off. Ladders must be taken down and secured at night. When transporting ladders, be sure they are tied securely to ladder racks with rope; no twine is to be used to tie down a ladder. Ladders should be inspected regularly to assure that they are free from defects.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT – Long pants, boots and shirts that extend over the shoulder to be worn at all times without exception. Long sleeve shirts must be worn when working with hot asphalt or pitch. Steel-toe boots must be worn when working in the shop. Safety glasses must be worn when tearing off a roof or when exposed to flying objects. Gloves, hardhats, earplugs and other personal equipment must be worn when conditions warrant. Kettleman must wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, boots, gloves and full face shield at all times.

POWER TOOLS – All power tools should have guards in place. Operators must be familiar with operation of tool, and safety precautions. Inspect power tools regularly.

SCAFFOLDING – Erect scaffold on solid, level ground. Only scaffold grade lumber or aluminum picks to be used at working areas. Picks and planks must be wired to scaffold to prevent movement. All scaffolds to have handrail, midrail and toeboards installed. All components of the scaffold including base, cross braces, picks, planks etc. are to be inspected daily before use.

SEAT BELTS – Seat belts must be worn in all company vehicles at all times without exception.

SECURING EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS – All equipment and materials are to be secured daily to prevent their illegal use or theft, and to protect the surrounding work area from falling or blowing objects.

TORCHES – Torches will not be left burning when not in use. Extreme caution must be used to prevent fires and burns. Never use a torch without a fire extinguisher being nearby. A fire watch shall be maintained for one hour after work is completed on every job that a torch is used.

WELDING – When welding, proper safety equipment including welding jacket, gloves and face shield is to be worn at all times without exception. Only trained personnel will use welding equipment.
